Hi Fellow Baseball Fans! I thought after all of the nice comments I have been getting and being that I am completely new to all of this I would blog about why I am here.
Obviously, I love baseball. I have been going to games pretty much all of my life. The first real memories I have I was about three years old. While Oakland Coliseum may not be the most pleasing to the eye stadium it's the most beautiful place in the world to me. But you all have to admit once you are actually inside the stadium the field itself is pretty top notch. Granted I am slightly biased but I must give my props to the grounds crew.
I was fortunate enough to be born in the 80's ('81 to be exact) and live through some great times in the baseball world (I also love Ronald Reagan so the 80's were pretty awesome for me.) But seeing Eckersley, McGwire (steroids or not), Canseco (you either loved him or hated him...I like him better now), Rickey Henderson, Dave Stewart, Carney Lansford, Walt Weiss, STEINY!!!!, Hendooooooooo, just the A's in general have provided me with some of the best times of my life. When it's the 9th inning and Eck would come in the game the calm that would come over the crowd was just incredible that is one thing that will stick with me forever even as a little kid I felt how amazing it was what I was experiencing. I just don't get a feeling like that watching any other sport. Baseball is truly in a league of its own. Those experiences are those that can even bring a grown man to tears.
I absolutely appreciate teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox (you don't know how hard that was for me to type), and Los Angeles (Brooklyn) Dodgers etc. But I feel the Oakland A's are under appreciated in the grand scheme of things. From the Philadelphia A's to the ::cough cough:: Kansas City A's (we really don't need to discuss that era any further) and now the Oakland A's. Maybe we never had Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams (true greatness with the bat), Alex Rodriguez (that's a joke people,) but we still had some great times. A little side note, I just have to put this out there because it was one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.
Ok, so I am at an A's game with my best friend and their are some chicks (I am rarely politically correct) and they were looking around the stadium and if you have paid attention you know that Oakland coliseum has the years the A's have won Championships (on 3rd deck) and one of those years is 1910. Ok people this is what a girl said..."That's when the stadium was built," the other girls in unison, "ooooooooooh." What? And then one said, "Then what are the other numbers?" Same girl who said 1910 was the year the stadium was built said, "I don't know," 2nd girl, "oh ok, I love the A's!" I about died, my friend and I were just staring at each other completely dumb founded. My jaw would have hit the ground but Oakland is a little dirty.
I would have loved to be around in the early 1900's to experience what baseball was like back then. I am the first to admit I am not some statistical queen, I don't watch the numbers as closely as others or as close as maybe l should. But my passion is the history. I love this game and I don't believe any sport can take its place as, "AMERICA'S GAME." I never was one that desired to play ball, even though I love to but I wanted to write about it, I wanted to get people to love the game as much as I do. I want people to really experience it for what it is. If you are reading this I am probably preaching to the choir for the most part but this is the game of all games. People want to argue that Baseball isn't a contact sport so it's "boring." I love the suspense I love the waiting for what is going to happen. There is the anticipation, will the run score, where will the ball go, will the big guy in blue totally screw it up and cost us a game? And no fights are as good as in baseball, well hockey might give it a run for it's money but when the benches clear man I love it! The A's I know like to be respectful and like most of us in California we are mellow as they come but man sometimes I wished Howe and Macha had ran out on the field a few more times. Geren needs to channel Lou (and if he was dead) or a little closer to home Billy Martin. I know fighting is bad but don't you enjoy it a little? I'm not ashamed to admit I do, especially when Jason Kendall went after John Lackey. (THAT WAS GREAT!) Even if you were an Angels fan seriously you have to understand why people can't stand that guy.
Well anyway I have been an Oakland A's fan since, forever! In the national league I do like the Padres and Astros and that goes back to when I was really young and my brother had some baseball vids and I remember seeing the Brown and the uniforms with the Star I loved those! I think they were the videos with Johnny Bench, something like the Baseball Bunch. Anyway, I was very entertained.
So my love goes back to the day I was born. I love this game! I hope to share my thoughts and my memories and hopefully you find some enjoyment in my endeavor to entertain and inform.
To all of the Baseball Fans our there here's to a GREAT 2009 season! May the best team WIN!
And again, I want to thank you for all of the kind comments up to this point keep them coming (good or bad I can take it)!
GO A'S!
